The People’s Kitchen is a public kitchen program at Arlington Public Library in East New York focused on collaborative cooking, mutual aid, intergenerational learning, food justice and popular education.
Built upon histories of food as a powerful resistance and organizing tool the People’s Kitchen serves as a gathering space where people co-create soultions to food insecuirty and beyond.
The People’s Kitchen was born out of a need to address food apartheid – the systems of racial and economic inequalities and oppression that limit and restrict food access.
The programming strucutrue has been co-created with East New York residents around 5 program areas each reflecting a different way food intersects with community well being, futures of public health, and infrastructure. The programming areas are: care, organize, earn and save, share, and learn.
